While visiting her first husband Farewell in Natal she met Chaka who wanted to
marry her.BIOGRAPHY: "Elizabeth sometimes accompanied her husband ( Lieutenant Farewell RN) on his trips inland. On one occasion she went with him to the royal kraal of the savage Zulu king, Shaka. Shaka was charmed, and immediately decided to add this comely white woman to his collection of black beauties. He took it for granted that Farewell would not refuse. Would not a horrible death await him should he dare to do so? Elizabeth was almost paralysed with fright, but Farewell pressed her hand and wispered that he would make a plan. Under the pretext of making various arrangements, he dressed his pretty wife in men's clothing, his her hair in a hunting cap, and smuggled her away during cover of night."
After Lt Farewell had in 1829 been treacherously murdered by a nativr chief on the Pondoland coast, Elizabeth returned to Cape Town, where she later married a well-known Capetonian, Gustave Aspeling"

"The William Daniel Aspeling herin referred to was of an exceptionally quiet and reserved disposition and never at any time, to my knowledge, did he refer to any relatives or connection, and upon his death left no trace whatsoever of his family or connections. I think that in the interest of the estate the belongings of the deceased should be sold by public auction to natives, who aare the only people likely to buy"
