Extensive write-up on funeral.

She lost three sons in the First World War. At her funeral she was honourd by
the B.E.S.L and her coffin was draped with the Union Jack. (This was an
unusual event for a women). She was the Leader of the Mothers of the Cape at
the unveilling of the Delville Wood Memorial in France.
She was the organist at the Wesleyan Church at Uitenhage before her marriage.
Her health was affected by the loss of her three sons.

She had six children. Annesley and two brothers were lost in the war.
Frederick, Nathaniel and Ella Francis survived their mother.

Grandfather of Dr Thomas Mills. He was married to Barbara Aspeling (RIN
108) better known as "Boppie". He came from Handsworth, England. Hence the name
of the house in Uitenhage called "Handsworth House" He apparently never lived
in Handsworth House as his wife , Barbara, only moved there after his death. He
was a member of "parliament". In those days it was known as the Legislative
Assembly.

Handsworth and Ella, who was known as "Girlie"

4. "I'm told that when the first motor car arrived in Uitenhage, Grandfather
Mills and his friend Mr Couldridge - Ena's father-in-law, were taken for a
drive one Sunday afternoon. They were'nt particularly brave about this
outing, and along the way, one said to the other, " If we get home safely,
I'll put a pound - a lot of money in those days - in the plate in Church
this evening," and the other replied, " So will I."
That evening they kept their promise!!

5. "LOST' CUP WILL BE PRIZE"

A golf trophy originally donated to the golf club by T. W. Mills in 1900
dissapeared and turned up 65 years later in Port Elizabeth. It was an
ornate solid silver hand-tooled cup.

6. Came out to South Africa to work for Lennons Ltd, Druggist,
Later opened his own pharmacy in Uitenhage.

Notes: This needs to be verified. There was a Will's Pharmacy in
Uitenhage. Florence Aspeling seemed to think that George Bacon bought
him out but R.B. Wicks, a pharmacist in Uitenhage who is knowledgeable
about the history of Bacon's doubts this.

Uitenhage from Oct 1901 to Sep 1903.
It is hanging in the Uitenhage Museum Drostdy Building

Llewellyn B.A. They had 4 sons named Thomas Bladon Mills
William Aspeling Mills , Audley Gordon Mills, and Edward Handswoth Mills.

who married Norman Maclear. Who had three children.

Her husband Thomas Mills (RIN 194) was from Handsworth, England. Barbara
was better known as "Boppie". She lived in Handsworth House in Uitenhage. He apparently never lived there as she moved there after his death. It was a beautiful home but has been broken down to make way for other buildings. In those days she had a Hansom Cab drawn by horses, with a driver. There was a seat for about three facing forward, and another facing backward. When she left Handsworth House she went to live with Thomas Bladon Mills (RIN 195) and his wife Florrie.
Eventually she said that she had so many grandchildren, and could not get them all into her car, so see bought another Buick, but a seven seater this time.

Extensive write-up with list of attendees
She was a staunch supporter of the Methodist Church and it was mainly
through her efforts assisted by the late Hon. Mrs John Dolley, that the
Manse was built. She was the Mayoress of Uitenhage from 1901 to 1903 and
did much charitable work in the Town. She was a gracious hostess and an
untiring worker at Civic functions. She was on holiday in Uitenhage when
her death took place. Prior to which she had been living with her son and
daughter-in-law Mr and Mrs Willie Mills on the farm "Advice" Steytlerville.

6. She along with her brother Johan Gustaaf (RIN 153) had private tutors at home.

She purchased her father's house in Jeffreys Bay which had 9 bedrooms.

BURIAL: According to his grand daughter Florence Helen Weston nee Aspeling his father found his grave site in Mossel Bay. She remembers the incident being with her parents when he found the grave stone. (I believe she was thinking of his son)

BIOGRAPHY: In the African Court Calendar there is a listing for Mr J.G. Aspeling - Customs: Clerk to the Comptroller.
It is probably Johan Gustav because elswhere it is mentioned that he was in the Civil Service since 1808

BIOGRAPHY: His inventory in the estate papers is very extensive. From Law books to a cow and manger. Everyhting is listed in great detail. Spoons, knives, forks furniture etc.

Graaff Reinet and finally Alexandria district, where they remained for quite a
few years until his death.
