Joined the army and was sent to guard the Power Station in Mount Rd/Harrower Rd
in Port Elizabeth.

Career:

Was Assistant City Electrical Engineer in Port Elizabeth for many years under
Mr Bradley. He did not have the academic qualifications to become City
Electrical Engineer. Had a wide knowledge of the electrical cables in Port
Elizabeth and was called upon often when fires etc occurred. When he retired he
went to the same position in Uitenhage under Mr John (Ian) Dawson.

Was born in Uitenhage but the family moved to either Swellendam or Mossel Bay
when he was 6 weeks old. He grew up there and was a "transport rider" (Horse,
gun, and cooking pot) for his father. He rode from Mossel Bay to Jeffreys Bay
where his Grandmother had a large double storey nine bedroomed holiday home. He eventually joined the South African Railways and Harbours (SAR&H) and was
stationed at Bluecliff near Uitenhage -- moved to Port Elizabeth (Baines
Street) After twenty years service he resigned then rejoined the SAR&H and was stationed at Swartkops.

His father was Herbert Harrison. The Harrison family had their own silk factory in Liverpool England. Herbert Harrison was sent out to South Africa as salesman. He was a friend of Barney Barnato, a famous entrepeneur (See The
Covenant by James Michener) His mother was Mary Elizabeth Schoonwinkel
(French?) born in Caledon. Died 94 years old in Bethlehem, Orange Free State.
She was married twice. The second time to John or Tommy Weston. His stepfather buried in South End Cemetery?
He has a brother named Bertie who was born when Tommy was three years old.

2. "Tommy (RIN 49) was three when his brother Bertie was born in Caledon" Hence Bertie's birthdate = 1901. Both Tommy and Bertie were born "Harrison" His mother was a Schoonwinkel (RIN 1316) who married John? Harrison (RIN 1315) Mary Schoonwinkel (RIN 1316) divorced Harrison who was later killed in a road accident while travelling. He was Jewish. Mary Schoonwinkel joined the Railway Station Tea Room in Cape Town, then had her own restuarants. She met Weston (RIN 1317) a Canadian and married him during the First World War. He died in in hospital in Port Elizabeth and was buried in the South End Cemetery Port Elizabeth.
Florence Helena Aspeling (RIN 48) was fifteen years old and Tommy Weston (Harrison) was 17 years old when they first met.

2. Mary Schoonwinkel married John (or Herbert) Harrison and had two children Thomas (RIN49) and Bertie (RIN (1319). She was then divorced from him. He was later killed in a road accident while travelling. He was Jewish.
Mary Elizabeth joined the Railway Station Tea Room in Cape Town, then had her own restuarants. She met John Tommy Weston (RIN 1317) a Canadian and married him during the First World War. He died in hospital in Port Elizabeth and was buried in the South End Cemetery, Port Elizabeth.

Bella Jane Black was only 6 years old when her mother died and all she can
remember was her mother lying in bed while she brushed Bella's hair.

Col. Stratford's letter came as rather a surprise as I had always been led
to believe that my grandmother's maiden name was Lewis. Until I can get
positive proof of her maiden name I have taken the liberty of giving her the
surname Lewis-Stratford for the sake of convenience and record keeping.
Col. Stratford derived the information from Mary Ann Black's death
certificate which was signed by W.H. Black. Hopefully, when and if I receive
documentation from Father Fahey in KWT, and a copy of the death certificate
from Pretoria this puzzle will be resolved.
